Alienation (Vefremdung) is a concept inextricably linked with the name of twentieth-century German playwright Bertolt Brecht, with modernism, the avant-garde and Marxists theory. However, as Phoebe von Held argues in this book 'alienation' as a sociological and aesthetic notion avant la lettre head already surfaced in the thought of eighteenth-century French philosopher and writer Denis Diderot. This original study destablizes the conventional understanding of alienation through a reading of Le Paradoxe sur le comTdien, Le Neveu de Rameau and (...) other works by Diderot, opening up new ways of interpretation and aesthetic practices. If alienation constitutes a historical development for the Marxist Brecht, for Diderot it defines an existential condition. Brecht uses the alienation-effect to undermine a form of naturalism based on subjectivity, identification and illusion; Diderot, by contrast, plunges the spectator into identification and illusion, to produce an aesthetic of theatricality that is profoundly alienating and yet remains anchored in subjectivity. It is widely held that our beliefs can be epistemically faultless despite being morally flawed. Theories of moral encroachment challenge this, holding that moral considerations bear on the epistemic status of our attitudes. According to attitude-based theories of moral encroachment, morality encroaches upon the epistemic standing of our attitudes on the grounds that we can morally injure others with our epistemic practices. In this paper, I aim to show that current attitude-based theories have asymmetric mechanisms: moral features only make (...) it harder for attitudes to secure epistemic merits. I argue that, if attitudes can incur moral injury, failure to form attitudes can too. To make sense of this, I contend, attitude-based accounts require symmetric mechanisms, allowing that moral considerations make it both harder and easier for attitudes to attain epistemic merits. I maintain that, once we recognize this, attitude-based encroachment views must soon concede that they sometimes demand we believe against the evidence. (shrink)

Grundzug der Herkunft ist die Selbstunterscheidung des biblischen Glaubens an den einen Wüstengott, der sich jeder lebensweltlichen Anschauung entzieht, (...) von dem in dieser Hinsicht eingängigeren Polytheismus. Als mögliche Zukunft zeichnet sich eine Tragödie ab: Der antipolytheistische Glaube treibt in seiner christlichen Spielart sich selbst gerade dadurch in den Untergang, dass er im Zeitalter der globalisierten Erfahrung der einen Welt in seine reine Gestalt gelangt und so einer radikalen Vergessenheit der Lebenswelt anheimfällt. ZusammenfassungAusgehend von der „Krise des Sakramentalen“ wird vorgeschlagen, das „Wie“ des Sakramentes, nicht das „Was“ neu zu erschließen. Dazu werden zunächst Grundzüge der Lebensphänomenologie von Michel Henry rekonstruiert, um anschließend Überlegungen im Versuch einer hermeneutisch-epistemologischen Anwendung das „Wie“ des Sakramentes als das In-Erscheinung-Treten des absoluten Lebens zu erschließen. Sakramente können damit als das In-Erscheinung-Tretens des Stiftungsereignisses des absoluten Lebens gedacht werden.

Gibt es ein einzelnes Problem, das mit Recht als das Grundproblem der Semantik bezeichnet werden kann? Der Titel dieses Buches behauptet es und unterstellt zugleich, Frege habe sich mit diesem Grundproblem auseinandergesetzt. Die Aufgabe der Semantik besteht darin, die unterschiedlichen semantischen Funktionen verschiedener Ausdrücke darzustellen; sie wird zum Problem, weil unklar ist, wie sie begonnen werden soll. Einerseits sind die selbständigen Ausdrücke (meistens syntaktisch und immer semantisch) komplex, so dass scheinbar auch ihre Funktionen aus denen der einfacheren, die sie aufbauen, (...) erklärt werden müssen; andererseits ist gerade dies unmöglich, weil die letzteren Funktionen sicher nicht von den ersteren abhängen. Freges Beitrag zur philosophischen Semantik besteht zunächst einmal in gegensätzlichen Vorschlägen - kompositionaler Charakter der Sätze bei gleichzeitiger Kontextualität der Aufbaustücke - die sich jedoch verständlich vereinbaren lassen, und eine Aufklärung jener Funktionen von den komplexen her, beispielsweise der des Behauptungssatzes, ermöglichen. Nun können auch Freges Überlegungen zur semantischen Funktion des Behauptungssatzes selbst fruchtbar gemacht werden, und von dorther wird schließlich auch seine Theorie der unterschiedlichen Funktionen der einfacheren Ausdrücke, insbesondere der Eigennamen und Prädikate, verständlich. Der hier zu unterbreitende Vorschlag mit dem 'Analogie'-Denken umzugehen, basiert auf einer zugespitzen Lesart der Gabe-Theologie, die im Anschluss an Michel Henry, Jean-Luc Marion und Marc Richir etabliert und mit den Vorschlagen zum Umgang mit der Analogie, wie sie Erich Przywara, Karl Barth, Eberhard Jungel und Wolfhart Pannenberg verstehen, in Kontrast gesetzt wird. Es wird dazu eine neue religionshermeneutische Phanomenologie des transpassiblen Momentes des Sakraments entwickelt, in der die Wir-Gestalt der Freiheit als eine Gabe eine zentrale Rolle spielt. 'Die' Analogie (...) wird als ein Gabegeschehen re-konzeptionalisiert gedacht, welche die Rede von Gott als zuruckgebunden an die transpassible Sprachgestalt der Freiheit von Gott und Mensch in ihrem Erschliessungverhaltnis als Ereignis zur Darstellung bringt. Die Frage, warum man moralisch sein soll, ist eine der ältesten und schwierigsten Fragen der Moraltheorie: Wie kann der Mensch dem moralischen Anspruch, dem er untersteht, gerecht werden? In welchem Verhältnis stehen moralische Urteile und Überzeugungen zu den Wünschen, Neigungen und Gefühlen des Menschen? Welche Rolle kommt der Vernunft in der Handlungsmotivation zu? Welche Bedeutung hat der religiöse Glaube für die menschliche Praxis? In der zeitgenössischen Moraltheologie werden diese grundlegenden Fragen weitgehend vernachlässigt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung leistet einen Beitrag, die Motivationsproblematik (...) wieder ins Zentrum der moraltheologischen Reflexion zu rücken. Ausgehend von einem Überblick über die gegenwärtige philosophische Diskussion um das Problem der moralischen Motivation wird die Motivationstheorie der Stoa rekonstruiert und ihre Rezeption durch Augustinus herausgearbeitet. Dabei erweisen sich die klassischen Motivationstheorien nicht nur als anschlussfähig an die gegenwärtige Diskussion, sondern sie bieten darüber hinaus auch wichtige Impulse für die Beschäftigung mit dem Motivationsproblem. Die Untersuchung entwickelt hermeneutisch-phänomenologisch eine Antwort auf die Frage, wie die Lebenswelt als Natur erfahren wird. Sie zeigt, wie der Naturbegriff bei Kant, insbesondere in den mathematischen Grundsätzen der «Kritik der reinen Vernunft», verarmt und wie er sich schon bei Aristoteles verengt. Bei beiden eröffnet sich aber zugleich die Möglichkeit des Rückgangs zu einem ursprünglicheren Naturverständnis im frühgriechischen Denken von Anaximander und Heraklit. Diesen Rückgang realisiert eine Neuinterpretation der Kosmologie und Psychologie des Aristoteles im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit. Das führt (...) zu einer Phänomenologie der Erfahrung des «Elementaren», das wissenschaftsgeschichtlich in Gestalt der alten Elemente Feuer, Wasser, Erde, Luft in Erscheinung trat, aber eigentlich eine viel weitere Bedeutung hat, die in den sogenannten subjektlosen Sätzen zur Sprache kommt. In recent years, Rorty’s anti-authoritarianism has been repeatedly associated with the loss of truth and a post-factual age. At the same time, Rorty is presented as a strict opponent of such positions. How is it that the same thinker who is held responsible for a postmodern decline is also to be understood as the most severe critic? To answer this question, this paper reconstructs Rorty’s anti-authoritarianism as a practice of solidarity by referring to his theory of recognition and virtue (...) of contingency. Subsequently, it can be shown why the accusations of post-facticity and ethnocentrism fall short. On the contrary, because his theory combines different political archetypes, the paper presents Rorty’s description of anti-authoritarianism as a social paradigm of contemporary societies. (shrink)

Among recent developments in the anthropological sciences, hardly any have found so much attention and led to so much controversy as have the views advanced by the late Benjamin Whorf.The hypothesis offered by Whorf is,“that the commonly held belief that the cognitive processes of all human beings possess a common logical structure which operates prior to and independently of communication through language, is erroneous. It is Whorf's view that the linguistic patterns themselves determine what the individual perceives in this (...) world and how he thinks about it. Since these patterns vary widely, the modes of thinking and perceiving in groups utilizing different linguistic systems will result in basically different world views”.“We are thus introduced to a new principle of relativity which holds that all observers are not led by the same physical evidence to the same picture of the universe, unless their linguistic backgrounds are similar. … We cut up and organize the spread and flow of events as we do largely because, through our mother tongue, we are parties to an agreement to do so, not because nature itself is segmented in exactly that way for all to see”. The aim of this study was to understand how mothers experienced midwives' uncaring behaviour and actions during birth. Sixty-seven first-time mothers took part in the study, in which data were collected through interview. The interview text was analysed using hermeneutic text analysis. Nearly half of the mothers interviewed (n = 32) said that midwives did not care for them. The findings show that midwives' behaviour was humiliating when they ignored mothers and held them in contempt. The mothers felt further (...) humiliated when the midwives did not believe them, treated their bodies in a careless manner and tended to put blame on them. Through their behaviour and actions, some midwives have shown that they no longer have a caring attitude as an element of their professional practice and that they have ignored ethics by offending mothers' sense of dignity. John Rawls offers an account of public reason that argues that comprehensive doctrines are admissible into public deliberations of fundamental political matters only when they are used to say things that can also be said on the basis of the noncomprehensive liberal political values of freedom and equality. This essay argues that elements of comprehensive doctrines ought to be allowed into public reason even when those elements cannot be translated into the terms of liberal political values. It draws on Ralph (...) Waldo Emerson's conception of communication among citizens and Stanley Cavell's interpretation of Emersonian moral perfectionism to develop a conception of public reason that allows a greater range of views held by citizens to play a legitimate role in democratic deliberations. An Emersonian conception of liberal democracy differs from Rawls's in that it more explicitly views the democratic community as actively engaged in continually revising and perfecting the liberal political values of freedom and equality. My analysis takes as its point of departure the controversial assumption that contemporary ethical theories cannot capture adequately the ethical and social challenges of scientific and technological development. This assumption is rooted in the argument that classical ethical theory invariably addresses the issue of ethical responsibility in terms of whether and how intentional actions of individuals can be justified. Scientific and technological developments, however, have produced unintentional consequences and side-consequences. These consequences very often result from collective decisions concerning the way (...) we wish to organise our economies and society, rather than from individual actions. It has been apparent for a long time now that it is not sufficient to construct an ethics of science and technology on the basis of the image of a scientist who intentionally wants to create a Frankenstein. Thus, as a minimum we would require an ethical framework that addresses both the aspect of unintentional side consequences (rather than intentional actions) and the aspect of collective decisions (rather than individual decisions) with regard to complex societal systems, such as the operation of our economy. We do not have such a theory available. More disturbing than the principle shortcomings of ethical theory are the shortcomings of conventional ethical practice with respect to technological developments. Below I will suggest how four different developments can illustrate these shortcomings, which centre around the fact that individuals in our society can simply not be held fully accountable for their individual role within the context of scientific technological developments. I will call these shortcomings of a theory (and practice) of individual role responsibility. This may help us to reflect on robotics too, insofar as robots may be perceived as replacements for “roles”. From there, I will argue why we have to shift our attention to an ethics of knowledge assessment in the framework of deliberative procedures. (shrink)

On Friday the 1st and Saturday the 2nd of December 1995, the Sonderforschungsbereich 340 held a workshop entitled Syntax and Semantics of Partial Wh-Movement. This volume contains most of the papers presented there.1 One of the leading ideas underlying the workshop was that detailed investigation of the partial wh-movement construction provides an excellent test ground for checking assumptions about the syntax/semantics interface.

This book introduces major philosophical theories and issues in the context of the contemporary debate about the so-called culture wars in American society. It is designed to make these theories come alive as they are related to these vital contemporary concerns and to provide a framework within which to assess the ongoing debate about the future direction of Western culture. Classical ethical positions like cultural relativism, emotivism, egoism, hedonism, utilitarianism and theorists like Kant are introduced and assessed. The contemporary theorists John Rawls and Alasdair MacIntyre are given extensive treatment and made accessible to the introductory student in philosophy. Culture War and Ethical Theory exhibits a non-ptolemical tone as it relates these theories, for heuristic purposes, to the contrasting perspective of fundamentalism and secular humanism. These two viewpoints are treated fairly without pretense of thorough exposition. They were chosen because they set the contemporary debate in stark relief. This new edition of The Heart is the flagship volume in a series of Dietrich von Hildebrand's works to be published by St. Augustine's Press in collaboration with the Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project. Founded in 2004, the Legacy Project exists in the first place to translate the many German writings of von Hildebrand into English. While many revere von Hildebrand as a religious author, few realize that he was a philosopher of great stature and importance. Those who knew von (...) Hildebrand as philosopher held him in the highest esteem. Louis Bouyer, for example, once said that "von Hildebrand was the most important Catholic philosopher in Europe between the two world wars." Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger expressed even greater esteem when he said: "I am personally convinced that, when, at some time in the future, the intellectual history of the Catholic Church in the twentieth century is written, the name of Dietrich von Hildebrand will be most prominent among the figures of our time." The Heart is an accessible yet important philosophical contribution to the understanding of the human person. In this work von Hildebrand is concerned with rehabilitating the affective life of the human person. He thinks that for too long philosophers have held it in suspicion and thought of it as embedded in the body and hence as being much inferior to intellect and will. In reality, he argues, the heart, the center of affectivity, has many different levels, including an eminently personal level; at this level affectivity is just as important a form of personal life as intellect and will. Von Hildebrand develops the idea that properly personal affectivity, far than tending away from an objective relation to being, is in fact one major way in which we transcend ourselves and give being its due. Von Hildebrand also developed the important idea that the heart "in many respects is more the real self of the person than his intellect or will." At the same time, the author shows full realism about the possible deformities of affective life; he offers rich analyses of what he calls affective atrophy and affective hypertrophy.
